Getting a group going

You cannot join your friend

These are two different problems wearing the same clothes. Work out which one you have before you troubleshoot anything.

Changed in version 1.4.9

Session passwords are now required

Since version 1.4.9 a session password is required to start a game, so every session has one. A join code on its own will not get you in — you need the code and the password. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab) checked 20 Aug 2026

The FAQ has not caught up and still calls a password a recommendation. If the code is being rejected outright rather than timing out, start on the join code page instead.

Added to the official FAQ on 12 August

Check your system clock before anything else

An inaccurate system clock will stop you joining a game or hosting one. The developers give it its own entry: if the device clock differs significantly from the online clock, it blocks both. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab) checked 12 Aug 2026

It applies to every device in the group, it blocks hosting as well as joining, and it gives no useful error. Turn on automatic time and timezone, then force a sync.

“Connection to host timed out”

Read this first

There is no confirmed fix, and it may well not be your setup. On the Steam discussion board, players report this error surviving everything they tried. Steam Community (secondary source, opens in a new tab) checked 9 Aug 2026

Players report the timeout surviving everything they tried: restarting, reinstalling, verifying game files, and handing hosting to somebody else. One describes a group of four playing fine for half an hour until the host crashed, after which any two people could connect but the rest could not. The developers have not responded in the thread.

That last detail is the interesting one. If any two people can connect but the rest cannot, the variable is not any single person's router. We are not going to tell you what it is: House House have not said, and we do not know. But it is worth knowing before you spend an evening reconfiguring your network.

What is worth trying

The developers publish exactly one piece of network guidance, and it is about bandwidth rather than configuration:

“Quit other network-heavy programs, shut down devices saturating your connection, move closer to the wireless router, and go wired over ethernet if you can.” Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

Apply it to the host first. Everything runs through their machine, so their connection and their framerate are everyone's problem rather than just their own. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

The developers also now ask you to do the obvious thing properly: Before anyone joins, the host should have the game running with their character loaded into the world, and should watch for connection warnings in the lower left of their screen. If joining still fails, everyone should close Big Walk completely, reopen it and try again. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab) checked 12 Aug 2026

Beyond that: have the host fully quit and start a fresh session, so everyone gets a new join code. Several reports involve a session that went wrong after a host crash, and a clean restart costs nothing but the walk back.

What we are not going to tell you to do

Search this error and you will find specific instructions: enable UPnP, forward UDP 30000–30010, forward UDP 27015–27030. We are not repeating them, and you should know why before you follow them somewhere else.

  • House House still publish nothing about ports, NAT or firewalls. They do publish connection troubleshooting, and it grew on 12 August to cover system clocks, host readiness and connection warnings. None of it mentions a port. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)
  • None of the port numbers trace to a source. 27015–27030 is Valve's general-purpose Source engine range, which is what you would copy in if you were guessing.
  • One of the sites promoting them sells a ping booster. A vendor whose product is “your network is the problem” is not a neutral party on the question of whether your network is the problem.

Port forwarding is not dangerous, and if you already know your way around your router you will lose nothing but time. But nobody has shown it fixes this, and the player reports point away from individual connections rather than towards them.

“Are the servers down?”

There are no servers to be down. Big Walk has no dedicated servers and no matchmaking: one player hosts, everyone else connects to that person's machine, the save lives with them, and the session ends when they stop playing. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

This is worth internalising because it changes where you look. There is no status page to check and no outage to wait out. When several people cannot connect at once, the thing they have in common is the host, not a service.

If the game says the session is not available

That is a different failure from a timeout, and it now has its own page: join code not working, or session not available. Wording along those lines points at a session that has ended rather than at your connection, and since 1.4.9 it can also mean you have the code but not the password.

Check everyone is on the same version. Big Walk is being patched steadily — 1.4.7, 1.4.8 and 1.4.9 all shipped in August — and the developers are precise about what has to match: Only the first two numbers of the version have to match for players to play together. A group on 1.4.7 and 1.4.9 is fine; a group split between 1.3 and 1.4 is not. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

They have not said a version mismatch causes the timeout specifically, so treat it as a cheap thing to rule out rather than a documented cause. 1.4.7 in particular lists “improvements to host stability” and to the friends' game browser, so being current is worth something here regardless. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

Searching this error brings back confident, specific instructions — relay servers, matching the first two digits of a version number, waiting exactly thirty seconds. We could not trace any of it to House House or a storefront, and two of the sites publishing it sell ping boosters. It is the same pattern as the port numbers above, so we are leaving it out.

If none of that works, report it

Then you have probably reached the end of what you can do from your side, and the useful thing left is to tell the people who can fix it. The Steam thread has no developer response, which is more likely to change if people write in than if everyone keeps reinstalling.

House House support

Open an email with the details filled in

A report that can be acted on beats one that cannot, so it is worth including:

  • Which platform you are on, and which the host is on.
  • Whether it fails every time or only sometimes.
  • What you have already tried, so nobody suggests it again.
  • Whether some people in the group can connect while others cannot — several reports describe exactly that, and it is the detail most likely to be diagnostic.

If a fix is confirmed, or the developers say anything, we will update this section and date the change.

The session is not there to join

This is the other failure: you never reach a connection attempt at all. Almost always one of these, and the first two account for most of it.

Start here: have the host open the in-game menu, go to Session Details, and read out the join code that is on screen right now. That single step clears the two most common causes at once: a stale code, and a friends list that was never going to work. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

  1. Is the host actually in the game?

Not merely running it. The developers ask that the host has the game up with their character loaded into the world, and that they watch for connection warnings in the lower left of their own screen. Big Walk has no persistent server, so until they are in, there is nothing to join. If the host quits, everyone else is dropped too.

  2. Is every clock accurate?

The developers give this its own entry: a device clock that differs significantly from the online clock will stop you joining and stop you hosting. It affects every machine in the group and produces no helpful error, so it is worth ruling out first.

Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

  3. Is the code from tonight?

A new join code is generated every single time the host starts a session. Yesterday's code, or the one still sitting in your group chat from the last evening, will not work. Have the host read out a fresh one.

Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

  4. Is anyone on the Mac App Store version?

That build has no Game Center support, so it cannot use friends-list joining at all. Anyone on it needs the join code every time, in both directions. This one is a single parenthesis in the official FAQ and it catches people out.

Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

  5. Are you actually friends on the same platform?

The automatic list only shows games hosted by people on your friends list on the platform you are playing on. Being friends on Steam does not put you on somebody's PlayStation list. Crossplay lets you play together; it does not merge the friends lists.

Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

  6. Did the host change the password?

The host can change the session password while the game is running, from Session Details in the in-game menu. If someone did that mid-evening, everyone still outside is now using the wrong one.

How joining is supposed to work

There are exactly two routes in, and knowing which one you are using tells you which things can break.

Friends list. If you are on each other's friends list on the same platform, the host's game appears automatically in a menu of active friend games. Otherwise anyone can join with a Join Code. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

Join code. The host's join code is shown in the corner of the host menu before the game starts, and afterwards under "Session Details" in the in-game menu — where the password can also be changed mid-session. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

There is no third route. Big Walk has no matchmaking and no public games list, so if neither of those is working you cannot fall back on browsing for a session. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

The host is the whole infrastructure

The host has to start playing first. Once a host starts a session, the other players can connect to it — and when the host stops the session, the other players are disconnected. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

HOST holds the save you you you starts first — nothing exists until they do quits — and everyone else drops with them their framerate is everyone's framerate
There is no server in this picture. Every consequence below follows from that.

This is why so many joining problems are not really joining problems. There is no server sitting there waiting for you. There is a person, and their machine.

And because the save lives with the host, switching hosts to fix a connection problem means switching whose save you are playing. Worth knowing before you do it mid-evening. Big Walk (House House) (primary source, opens in a new tab)

Common questions

How do you fix "connection to host timed out" in Big Walk?

There is no confirmed fix. Players on Steam report the error surviving restarts, reinstalls, file verification and changing who hosts. The developers have not responded. Work through the network advice the developers do publish, and apply it to the host first since everything routes through them, but be aware that several people who did all of that still could not connect.

Do you need to port forward for Big Walk?

Nobody knows, because House House have published no network requirements at all: no ports, no NAT guidance, nothing. Specific port ranges are circulating on aggregator sites with no traceable source, and one of the sites promoting them sells a ping booster. We do not repeat them.

Why can I not join my friend's Big Walk game?

If you never reach a connection attempt, the usual causes are that the host has not started a session, the join code is from a previous session, or you are not on each other's friends list on the same platform. If you do reach a connection attempt and it times out, that is a different problem with no confirmed fix.

Does Big Walk have dedicated servers?

No. One player hosts and everyone connects to them. The host holds the save, has to start first, and when they stop the session everyone else is disconnected. This is why so many connection problems are really host problems.

Can a wrong system clock stop you joining Big Walk?

Yes, and the developers give it its own entry in the FAQ. If a device clock differs significantly from the online clock it will prevent that device from joining a game and from hosting one. Turn on automatic time and timezone on every machine in the group, then force a sync.

Are the Big Walk servers down?

There are no servers to be down. Sessions are hosted by a player, not by House House, so there is no status page to check and no outage to wait out. If several people cannot connect at once, the common factor is the host.

Still stuck

If everyone can get in but nobody can hear each other, that is the voice troubleshooter instead.
